The Silver Lining

As a therapist, a large part of what I do essentially involves instilling hope in clients about their situation and the future – helping them realise that they can, in fact, heal. That there is hope.

This is where the concept of neuroplasticity comes in. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to continually forge new neural pathways in response to the environment. What this means is, it is possible to have your brain physically adapt and respond to healing, and to physically evolve. This can directly positively impact your thoughts, behaviours and personality traits over time. Trauma doesn’t have to remain a part of you forever.

Another source of comfort is the possibility that we are not solely defined by adverse experiences in childhood, that positive childhood experiences may have a greater impact than the adverse. More details here.

Ultimately, one way of healing involves going back to your roots, getting back in touch with your core self. Healing and re-parenting your inner child is a good starting step for that. Find out more about inner child work here, and here.
